Naturopathic Medicine

About Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine emphasizes prevention and the self-healing process through the use of natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) blend centuries-old knowledge and a philosophy that nature is the most effective healer with up-to-date research on natural therapies, health and disease. The therapies used in naturopathic medicine integrate conventional, scientific and empirical methods with the ancient laws of nature and follow these guiding principles:

• First Do No Harm
• The Healing Power of Nature
• Discover and Treat the Cause, Not Just the Effect
• Treat the Whole Person
• The Physician is a Teacher
• Prevention is the best “cure”

A visit with a Naturopathic Doctor combines the best of both worlds – medicine supported by scientific evidence and the gentle approach of a holistic practitioner. During your initial visit with  Dr. Tracy or Dr. Woodall, they will take the time to listen to your personal health history and evaluate your current symptoms. They will create a plan for you with dietary or lifestyle changes, herbal medicines, homeopathy, or vitamins and may also recommend laboratory testing at this time to further investigate your symptoms.

The one-month follow-up visit will be used to review labs results, track progress, answer questions that may have arisen since the initial visit, evaluate your current plan and make any changes necessary.

Subsequent follow-up visits are scheduled 1-6 months apart, depending on your symptoms and medical condition.

Types of Therapies

Personalized Nutrition

Adopting a healthier and more specific nutritional lifestyle is often the first step towards correcting health problems. Many medical conditions can be treated more effectively with foods and nutritional supplements than they can by other means. However, with the plethora of information, fads and distractions available in the media and online today, it can be confusing to find the right path for yourself. Let Dr. Tracy listen to your health story and your current symptoms, get to know you and your goals, and review your labs and other reports to create a personalized nutritional prescription just for you.

Herbal Medicine

Plants have powerful healing properties and many pharmaceutical drugs have their origins in plant substances. Dr. Tracy uses plant medicines for their healing effects in many forms including capsules, tablets, powders, teas, tinctures (liquid extracts), syrups and topical preparations. Dr. Tracy primarily uses European and Ayurvedic (Indian) medicinal herbs in her practice.

Gemmotherapy is a specialized form of herbal medicine that uses remedies made from the buds and young shoots of trees and shrubs, picked just as they emerge in springtime. These remedies contain high concentrations of nutrients, vitamins, and enzymes and are used to support the actions of specific tissues and organs. Gemmotherapy is particularly useful in detoxification, women’s health, helping prescription medications work better and relieving acute symptoms such as sinus congestion, inflammation and headaches. Because the Gemmo Remedies are employed in drop doses, they are an excellent choice for children.

Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements includes natural vitamins, minerals, amino acids, protein powders, anti-oxidants and food based nutrients which are often recommended together as part of a comprehensive plan for one’s health and disease management. When considering the use of dietary supplements, Dr. Tracy ensures proper manufacturing and labeling and recommends therapeutic doses of supplements for maximum effectiveness. Dr. Tracy does not believe you require a laundry list of nutritional supplements to thrive. She will create a comprehensive and streamlined plan with physician quality herbs and supplements designed for your success.

Hormone Therapy

Dr. Tracy frequently recommends various forms of bio-identical hormone therapy to help women with peri-menopause and menopause symptoms, rebound from stress-related illness, improve sleep and boost energy levels. However, Dr. Tracy does not use bio-identical hormones as a first response to a patient’s symptoms. The use of hormones inherently involves some risk and she optimally uses dietary changes, lifestyle changes, herbal medicine and liver detoxification, such as the Whole health Goddess DETOX Program, to achieve hormone balance and symptom relief before recommending medicinal hormones.

Bach® Flower Remedies

Bach® Flower Remedies are homeopathic flower remedies that correct emotional imbalances used therapeutically for anxiety, stress, insomnia, depression and grief. The Bach® Flower Remedies work well in conjunction with herbs, homeopathy and prescription medications and are a safe option for children.

This gentle yet effective system of medicine is more than 200 years old and is based on the principle, first recognized by Hippocrates, that like cures like. Homeopathic medicines are very small doses of natural substances that can stimulate the body’s self-healing response without side effects. Homeopathic medicines are chosen for a client based upon which physical, emotional and mental symptoms they are experiencing.

Lifestyle Counseling and Stress Management

Dr. Tracy recognizes that lifestyle stress, mental attitudes and emotional states can be important elements in healing and disease. Dr. Tracy is trained in identifying stress related illness and using lifestyle counseling, nutritional balancing, and stress management techniques to help her patients reach optimal health.

Physical Medicine

Naturopathic Doctors are also trained to employ therapeutic exercise, massage, hydrotherapy, gentle electrical therapies and ultrasound. We have the advantage of referring to the Massage Therapists at Advanced Health & Wellness and recommend massage therapy, trigger point therapy, infrared sauna and reflexology to compliment Naturopathic Medicine.
